In Nepali entertainment industry, Bhuwan KC needs no introduction. He has delivered more than hundred films super hits like Kusume Rumal, Samjhana, Nepali Babu and others among them. A man who loves his country, KC shares his story about Kathmandu:
Kathmandu is:
I am fond of traveling to different places. But no matter where I go, I always want to come back to Kathmandu. For me, it the most loved place in world. It is a city that does not require air conditioning, it’s has the best weather. I just love my Kathmandu.
Where were you born and brought up in Kathmandu?
I have been born and bought up in Kathmandu and when my time comes, I would even want to die in Kathmandu. My ancestors have been living here for a very long time. I was born in Singamangal. We still live in our same house near airport.
What has been your fondest memory of Kathmandu?
At different phases in my life, Kathmandu has been with me. This city holds good, bad, beautiful and ugly moments of my life. I have done my schooling and my college here. I started my film career here. Each and every change I have experienced in this city is my fondest memory.
What do you miss the most about Kathmandu when you are traveling?
Firstly I miss the weather; I think Kathmandu has an amazing climate. And then, I miss food the most. I really long for our daal, bhaat, tarkari and achar. Also, I miss my friends and festivities of this place.
Which spots in Kathmandu, do you usually prefer doing your shoots?
Places like Dhulikhel and Nagarkot, just outside Kathmandu, offer the best sceneries. In the city itself, we are usually doing the shoots at Durbarmarg.
Which part of Kathmandu do you think truly represents the spirit of the city?
Kathmandu could’ve been better if the government took some action, and preserved areas like Budhanilkantha and other such neglected historical places—they really represent Kathmandu’s past. In yester years, New Road used to represent the spirit of the city but nowadays it’s Durbarmarg. You know, it really reflects the urban hubbub.
What advice would you give a tourist visiting the city?
I think the tourists would not be much interested in the city life of Kathmandu. I think they would rather like to see old houses that hold so many stories. I believe that tourists find our city different because of the history it holds.
If you could change one thing about Kathmandu what would it be?
We need to make the roads better and take some action to control the pollution.
How do you think Kathmandu’s traffic can be managed?
Instead of just demolishing the old houses and widening the roads, we actually need to construct flyover bridges in the main city.
Where do you usually hang out in Kathmandu?
Durbarmarg or Thamel.
Why?
I think Thamel is assorted with different kind of culture, ambiance and food. Durbarmarg, on the other hand, always has parking spots.
If not in Kathmandu, where would you be?
Pokhara because it is very serene and is not polluted.
How do you escape Kathmandu’s regular grind?
I usually like traveling outside the country. But within the country, I go to Chitwan and Pokhara.
If you were to make a movie of one aspect of Kathmandu, what would it be?
I have not thought about it yet, but I see a lot of movies being based on the different lifestyle of Kathmandu, which is really interesting. However I would like to make an adventurous film , maybe based on the life history of Prithivi Narayan Shah or Tenzin Sherpa’s Mount Everest Expedition.
Where do you usually do your shopping in Kathmandu?
I don’t have a specific shopping mall nor am I a brand conscious person. I buy anywhere and everywhere as long as I see something that I like.
What do you think about the shopping malls in Kathmandu?
There should stop trying to sell fake items saying it’s original. The best piece of advice you have received so far. I have not followed any advice. I have struggled on my own and learnt from my own mistakes. I think when you learn by yourself, you give yourself advices that you follow from your heart.
How would you like to be remembered?
I hope even when I’m not there, everyone remembers me as an actor.
