Choosing the Right Lamp for Every Room

When choosing the perfect lamp for your private sanctuary look for something pretty then check its angle and height so its just right for curling up in bed with your favorite book.
The height of the lamp depends on the size of your night table. According to most experts, a bedside lamp shouldn’t top 30 inches when it’s next to a tall bed to keep you from staring into the shade. If you like to read in bed, you’ll want the light to fall on the page, not in your partner’s eyes.

According to interior designers, the lamp should be placed close to the wall to make space on the table for other essentials.
Simiarly, the shade needs to be small so you don’t bang into it when you’re fumbling for the alarm clock or your glasses.
Fabric and paper shades are best for the bedroom and get a lamp with a stretch cord so you won’t have to stretch too far to switch it off.

Think of living room lamps as one part light and one part sculpture. They should be exquisite to look at whether on or off. Just make sure they don’t block the view or get in the way of conversation.

According to Sapna Sapkota, interior designer at Bella Casa International, most living rooms can handle a lamp that’s 26 to 34 inches tall. “If your living room has height, then chandelier can be used, or else as a decorative piece you can also use long neck lamp at the corner of the room. But you don’t want to be looking up into the hardware,” says  Sapkota. She further stated that  to see if your lamp is right for a given table, sit on the sofa or the chair next to it, the bottom of the shade shouldn’t fall higher than eye level.”

Rooms should have a light source every 10 feet or so. If a lamp is on a table between a sofa and a chair, consider a thin or transparent base to allow free flow of conversation. The best kind of shade for this room is a fabric or semi-opaque paper shade that gives a warm, flattering glow. Near a TV, an opaque shade of any material can minimize glare. In general, drum shades look more modern; conical ones, more traditional. A shade should never extend past a table’s perimeter.

A child’s bedroom calls for playful touches. But, safety matters the most. Table lamps should have a steady base to prevent tip-overs.
Small children require little lamps, whether the lamps sit on a desk or next to the bed. Keep your child’s age and size in mind before choosing a lamp for their room.

“For a kids room, the lamp should be a decorative piece and should match the room’s interior, stated Sapkota.

Additionally, when choosing a lamp for the children’s pick a material that can handle hard knocks, such as metal, plastic, or wood.
